Abstract : This paper examines M. Mustafa Al-A'zami's attempt to prove the existence of an uthmanic script in qur'anic manuscripts since the first century of Islam to the present. There has been a debate among scholars about whether the Qur’an existed in a specific written form since the first century of Islam and if so, in what form. This paper addresses the following questions: Who is M. Mustafa Al-A'zami? What are his contributions in qur'anic studies? What methods has he used to analyze qur’anic manuscripts? What are the strengths and weakness of his study of the qur'anic manuscripts? To answer these questions, I employ an inductive method to acquire information about Al-A'zami's biography and contributions, and a content analysis method to analyze Al-A'zami's discussion of qur'anic manuscripts and its strengths and weaknesses. This paper contains an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. The first chapter analyzes several contemporary studies on the qur’anic manuscripts. The second chapter offers a brief biography of Al-A'zami and outlines his contribution in qur'anic studies. The third chapter evaluates his study of the qur’anic manuscript and assesses its strengths and weaknesses. The conclusion sets out the findings and make suggestions and recommendations for further study. This paper concludes that Al-A'zami's study of qur'anic manuscripts is distinguished by its method of the comparing whole words in one surah between 18 manuscripts, and by the presentation of accurate statistics. However, there are some similarities with other studies in this field and some tiny flaws in his study. The results of his study do not conclusively prove the existence of an uthmanic script in qur'anic manuscripts since the first century of Islam. I suggest that the scope of these studies be extended to include the rest of the surahs in the Qur'an using the qur'anic manuscripts from the first century AH to the thirteenth century AH.
