Abstract : As in many cultures, elders hope to age at home in Saudi Arabia, where proximity to family and social interaction among relatives is highly prized. However, not all housing available to them provides optimal conditions for successful aging. This study explores whether biophilic design—buildings and spaces that allow for a human connection with nature, and which are widely credited with promoting positive physical and mental well-being—may contribute to creating empathetic, healthy, supportive, and culture-agreeable home environments for elders in Saudi Arabia. The study is based on interviews conducted with 27 residents (50 years or older) in Jeddah, KSA, and relies on content analysis methods to identify culturally relevant biophilic design patterns that support dimensions of wellness for successful aging. The study established eleven biophilic design strategies that satisfy cultural preferences and create wellness opportunities for aging in place.
