Abstract : "European social movements have increasingly joined forces to unite in their opposition to neo-liberal globalisation and austerity, mobilizing thousands of people in the process. But how do such progressive movements, traditionally populated by secular left-wing activists, deal with religious pluralism and the novel reality of those who identify as Muslims? In this book, Timothy Peace uses the example of the alter-globalisation movement, characterised by the slogan 'Another world is possible', to explain why social movement leaders in Britain and France reacted so differently to the emergence of Muslim activism. It examines why the reference to religion posed such a dilemma for some, while for others it constituted an opportunity. The book provides a unique contribution to our understanding of political participation amongst Muslim minorities today whilst also situating their involvement historically, thereby demonstrating the effective continuity between the migrant struggles of the first generation and those of their children, who grew up as European citizens. It also suggests that the role of religion should not be overestimated, arguing that Muslim activists are fundamentally no different to others in the movement."--
