The novel starts with a car accident and sees most of its action in a roadhouse in rural New South Wales. Diana Kooper leaves her car wrapped around a power pole in downtown Sydney, her best friend slumped across the shattered windscreen. Fleeing the scene by train for Cobar and beyond, Diana will not know for the length of the novel whether her friend is alive or dead. She is a martyr at 18 to memory and other people's addictions.
