Abstract : Angiogenesis, the development of new blood vessels from an existing vascular bed, is an essential feature in many pathological conditions, including cancer, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetic neuropathy. Inadequate regulation of angiogenesis can often lead to chronic pressure ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and myocardial infarction. In The New Angiotherapy, an international team of experts critically review the recent progress in both basic and applied research on angiogenesis. Their cutting-edge discussion ranges from the stimulation and repression of angiogenesis to the discovery of novel angiotherapeutic targets and their use in the clinic. Details of fundamental concepts in angiogenesis physiology and pathophysiology are provided, and the potential of angiotherapy in the management of angiogenic disease is evaluated, highlighting some of the angiogenic and antiangiogenic agents both in development and in clinical trials. The future prospects of receptor antagonists, enzyme inhibitors, and vascular targeted approaches, especially gene therapy in the development of angiotherapy, are also covered. Authoritative and cutting-edge, The New Angiotherapy illuminates our understanding of the central role of human angiogenesis, as well as the novel therapeutic approaches now made possible by our ability to control vascular development.
