"This book describes the stage by stage development of a new method for predicting the penetration rate (PR) and the advance rate (AR) for tunnel boring machine. It is based on an expanded version of the Q-value, termed Q[subscript TBM]. Some 145 TBM tunnels totalling about 1000 km in length were analysed. As a result some simple formulae are developed, to estimate PR and AR from the Q[subscript TBM] value, or to back-calculate Q[subscript TBM] from performance data. Logging methods, empirical TBM tunnel support design, and numerical verification of support are also treated in this slim but practical book on TBM tunnelling."
