Abstract : The types of warfare used during the French and Indian War were diverse, ranging from savage fighting in the forests and mountains of the North American frontier to city sieges and open battles in the European style. Initially, the British regulars struggled to cope with the unfamiliar terrain and the tactics of the opposing American Indians and Canadian militia, leading to such disasters as the battle of Monogahela. As the war progressed, the British army learned from their native allies and Colonial forces, and initiated reforms, adapting to the unique conditions. In contrast, the strong position New France enjoyed in the early part of the conflict crumbled as reinforcements and supplies dwindled, and the Marquis de Montcalm was left unable to defend the last outposts of New France. The implications of the bloody conflict reached around the world, contributing to the outbreak of the Seven Years' War, the first global conflict. In North America, the aftermath of the French and Indian War created tensions in the British colonies that would culminate in the American Revolution. This beautifully illustrated book charts the campaigns of the war, focusing on the troops of both armies, the tactics employed, and the personalities that shaped the conflict. -- Inside jacket flap.
