"Drawing from sources such as the author's personal diary as an eleven-year-old in a Catholic girls' school and a plethora of interviews, Elena Garces is able to create an erudite analysis of the patriarchal structures on which most world communities stand. Colombian Women examines culture, history, economics, law, and religion in the context of Colombia. Garces promotes ideas that demolish the "forced enclosure" of women in that society. Using the life stories of eighteen Colombian women as starting points, Garces explores their experiences and suffering in the context of family life and social institutions.
