This dissertation examines the novel Consolaçam às Tribulaçõens de Israel, written by Samuel Usque and published in Ferrara, Italy in 1553. The book---simultaneously written as a historical account, a rabbinical response and a pastoral novel---emerges from the context of the expulsion of the Portuguese Jews from Iberian soil in 1497. The "peregrinação" (wandering) of these Jews, characterized by persecution and suffering, posed a timeless theological problem for the author and Rabbi. Here, I examine the different ways in which Samuel Usque exposes and answers the latter question about Jewish suffering. Incorporating rich dialogue and situated in a pastoral setting, Usque's Biblical characters talk and console to the Portuguese "da nação" (Portuguese of the Hebrew Nation). The message is clear: their struggles, pains and persecutions were not in vain. Their suffering was not to be interpreted as a loss, but rather as a symbol for hope and future redemption. Interestingly, rather than engaging solely in theological debates and reflections concerning the suffering, Samuel Usque concentrates on reflections on the future. He offers a message of redemption, and sees hope in the ashes of destruction. According to Samuel Usque, the Portuguese Jews must not only have hope, they must also continue to believe in God. They must live and give meaning to their past sufferings.
