Abstract : Cost and schedule overruns continue to plague construction projects in Nigeria. Earned value management (EVM) has been identified and shown to be a viable parameter for controlling cost and schedule overruns in construction projects. There is, however, a paucity of research into the applicability of EVM to the Nigerian construction projects. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the viability of EVM as a project control tool in Nigerian construction projects. The EVM theory, EVM Indices and application, and project management methodologies formed the conceptual framework of the study. A single research question was developed which focused on the effect of EVM on construction project outcomes for Nigeria's construction industry. This study was a quantitative methodology with a descriptive and inferential research design to determine the relationship between the application of EVM and outcomes in construction projects in Nigeria. The population for this study was construction projects that were completed within the last 15 years in the Nigerian construction industry. The included-sample consisted of projects that implemented EVM in their project controls. Data from 55 construction projects were analyzed to examine the impact of EVM on construction project outcomes. A logistic regression model was estimated, and the impact of independent variables on the dependent variable was computed. The Cost Performance Index (CPI) was found to be highly significant based on the odds ratios that were determined. The importance of EVM application as a project control tool in Nigeria's construction business is evident from the result of this study. The study also serves as a reference point for further research into EVM application and other project management practices.
