Abstract

This dissertation examines an intercultural encounter in World Christianity involving the Baptist Work in Nacala, Mozambique, their intercultural encounter with the Tarikhi Ya Haakhi movement in Angoche, Mozambique, and their efforts to reach the Makhuwa Nahara. Chapter 1 introduces current themes in World Christianity, providing an overview of significant principles in phenomenon. Lamin Sanneh describes the principles of Transmission, Translation, and Transformation. Andrew Walls describes the Indigenous and Pilgrim principles, while Lesslie Newbigin describes the principle of Domestication. These principles are foundational for considering a framework for intercultural dialog. Chapter 2 finds a precedent for intercultural dialog in the Acts 15 narrative of the Jerusalem Council. Chapter 3 provides the research rationale for the focused oral histories which follow. Chapter 4 discusses the context of the Nacala Baptist work by considering the historical entanglements and disentanglements which characterize N acala. Chapter 5 provides a historical overview and broad description of the characteristics of the Tarikhi Ya Haakhi movement. Chapter 6 relates the intercultural encounter and the ensuing dialog between the Nacala Baptist work and the Tarikhi Ya Haakhi movement. The dialog compels the Baptist leaders to elaborate mandate for Muslim ministry among the Makhuwa Nahara. Nature of the intercultural dialog is measured against the Jerusalem Council encounter. Chapter 7 provides a summary of the research and recommends that a framework for intercultural dialog includes a common understanding of the message and nature of the gospel, the affirmation of the Holy Spirit, the authority of Scripture over culture, and the imperative of unity within the body of Christ. Suggestions for further research are included.
