Abstract : Many of the questions revolving around the social engagement of hip hop culture in diverse global contexts have been investigated, yet they have been largely ignored with respect to the Nigerian context. This is especially surprising because recent years have not only seen the internationalization of Nigerian hip hop but also social contestations and transformations within Nigeria that were actually galvanized by this musical culture. Integrating theoretical and methodological insights from sociocultural linguistics, literary studies, and African cultural studies, the present dissertation responds to this gap by exploring how youth participating in Nigerian hip hop culture harness the performative resources of language in the production of a wide range of intersectional identities. Drawing on a close reading of Nigerian hip hop lyrical texts and eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork (from February 2016 to August 2017), the dissertation further considers ways that the multilingual and narrative instantiations of these youth identities call attention to, contest, and redraw the social cartographies of youth marginality, political oppression, urban poverty, interethnic tensions, colonial language hegemony, and gender roles and imbalance. By collapsing the boundaries between the social and the cultural, this dissertation on a broader level expands our understanding of changing social relations in Nigeria and Africa and the role that hip hop language and discourse play in the emergence of these.
