Abstract : Insecurity is a major predicament that confronts African nations today. Violent acts are committed in many countries by both state agencies and disgruntled citizens. Nigeria ranks high in the world in terms of the use of deadly force by state security agencies against unarmed citizens. Furthermore, Nigeria occupies the top position in Africa and comes after Iraq and Afghanistan in home-grown terrorist attacks. Incessant killings by Islamic radical groups (Boko Haram and Fulani Herdsmen), kidnappers, and armed robbers are a daily occurrence in Nigeria. Inter and Intra ethnic conflicts, agitation by marginalized religious, ethnic, and political groups have diminished the status of Nigeria in the world. This situation has negatively affected the country’s socio-economic development. The researcher’s objective in this dissertation is to examine both past and contemporary forms of state and ethno-religious violence in Nigeria. The investigator also underscores the socio-economic and ideological substratum of these conflicts. This study utilized a case study approach and a bivariate correlation to analyze violence in Nigeria. As a unit of study, Nigeria required an in-depth investigation of acts of violence perpetrated by both state agents and ethno-religious groups in the country. The case study method allowed the researcher to critically examine the practical issues regarding the interplay of state and ethno-religious violence. The researcher established a relationship between ethno-religious and state violence in Nigeria. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was also used to measure the linear relationship between state-induced and ethno-religious violence. The researcher utilized criminological theories, such as radical, labeling, and peacemaking perspectives. The investigator also analyzed pertinent literature, official documents, and state security agencies to unravel the failure of government actions and policies to deal with violence in Nigeria. Besides, the researcher analyzed the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI), the Nigerian Security Tracker (NST), and the Amnesty International database on violence in Nigeria. This procedure was to prove the validity of the qualitative data. The researcher recommends both economic and political measures to guarantee safety, stability, and human flourishing in Nigeria.
