| Abstract

Background of the Problem Microfinance institutions play a decisive role in transforming the lives of poor people, especially in developing countries like Ethiopia; they can reach out to the poor people where in access to the formal banking system is nearly impossible. In Ethiopia, the introduction of micro-finance institutions, backed by the government, have been flourishing since the 1990's and today, there are around 23 microfinance institutions legally registered in the country. The existence of such institutions is believed to have an impact on poverty reduction, as they can easily reach out to the people who are deprived of service from the formal financial institutions. However, the performance of these institutions vis-à-vis to their own sustainability as well as poverty reduction requires a continues and thorough research and analysis by all stake holders, including, policy makers, scholars and academics. In Ethiopia, the performance of these institutions in relation to sustainability and poverty reduction was not adequately addressed, and the number of research papers in this regard are quite few, necessitating the need for more re-search and analysis on the subject matter. Problem Statement The theory and practice of microfinance institutions is flourished in recent times as a remedy for poverty reduction for developing nations. Even if this is the case, there are hardly very few studies in this regard. Therefore, this research is conducted to bridge the gap in this respect. Research Objective The general objective of the study is to evaluate the performance of microfinance institutions in Ethiopia. The specific objectives are: 1.
