Abstract : Background. Few studies have researched for any modifying effects from both food insecurity and child abuse towards childhood obesity. Purpose. This study evaluated the relationship between food insecurity, child abuse, and childhood obesity through an ecological analysis of Tennessee counties. Methods. The Kidscount database was used to compare county level rates in Tennessee during 2014 and 2016. Results were assessed through linear mixed-model analysis. The Adverse Childhood Experiences health model and Social Ecological model formed the basis for the theoretical frameworks. Results. Child food insecurity was strongly associated with the prevalence of overweight and obese children (p < 0.001). Child abuse was marginally associated (p < 0.078). A significant interaction was observed between child food insecurity and child abuse. Study Implications. While previous studies have linked child food insecurity and child abuse to obesity, this study helps to demonstrate that these determinants may have both independent and modifying effects on the rates of obesity at the county level.
