Abstract : This study intends to examine the differences between the vowel systems of English and Turkish and find out what effects the English vowel inventory has on the acquisition of Turkish vowels for L1 English speakers acquiring L2 Turkish. Theoretically, L2 learners of a language potentially experience certain challenges in the process of producing vowels in their target language, depending on the phonetic systems the said languages govern versus that of their native language (e.g. non-binary vowel systems). There have thus far been several studies conducted on statistically more commonly spoken and taught languages, such as many European languages like German and French, as well as on Asian languages like Arabic and Mandarin; however, the intent of this study is to investigate Turkish, a language spoken in Eurasia. Although Turkish phonology has been studied thoroughly, studies on the acquisition of Turkish phonetics are unfortunately scarce, which was one of the motivations for investigating and comparing the vowel space of Turkish.
