Abstract
:
The concept of alterity has a long history in the Western philosophical tradition. Commonly articulated as recognition of an “other” or of “difference”, the meaning and usage of alterity in the social sciences and humanities have varied. In this dissertation, I offer a discussion of alterity in three separate articles. Article one addresses alterity directly by defining it, analyzing its use historically, troubling the western philosophic portrayal of it, and discussing the more modern reconceptualization of it. Articles two and three provide two separate analyses of a racialized form of alterity in evocative, real-world, religious encounters. By enlisting various methodological approaches to the “self/Other” relationship, articles two and three make a meaningful contribution to the literature on alterity through the use of multiple qualitative methods. Through the lens of critical qualitative inquiry, I emphasize in this dissertation the necessity of respect and of care within the self/Other dichotomy in an era where racial, national, and religious alterity is again rupturing and dividing the nation.
