Abstract : This study of universities in South-Western Nigeria has predicated on the premise that service quality in higher education is crucial for the effective and efficient management of universities. Some scholars have argued that perceived poor service quality will ultimately affect funding and viability in the university sector by reducing the popularity of the institution and thus the number and standard of applicants, but that the effect is indirect and relatively low. With limited research on the role that resources and service quality mechanisms play in higher education to sustain their learning communities in varying contexts and in different ways, the current study focused on addressing this gap. Based on resource dependence theory and the SERVQUAL service quality model, this study utilized a quantitative cross-sectional descriptive approach to analyze the relationship between perceived funding level and service quality dimensions for employees of different institutional status in the Nigerian university sector. The research project also focused on the differences in perceptions of university funding and service quality for different groups of employees in the higher education sector. This study revealed significant differences were in perceived funding level as well as perceived service quality dimensions based upon institutional status. This study sheds more light into the service quality and resources relationship, and will provide guidance to administrators, policymakers and potential funders on alternative funding sources for improving service quality in the target institutions.
