Abstract : The arrival of colonialism, Christianity and Islam introduced widespread changes into African societies, affecting, reducing and eroding women’s traditional roles and privileges, changing and distorting existing gender formation and roles, and strengthening male domination and patriarchy. This has severely impacted the development of Yoruba women in southwest Nigeria as the institution of these foreign norms is inimical to their progress and has set them back centuries from lost in order to reclaim and reshape a future for Yoruba women to take their rightful place and become queens of their destinies, and for Yoruba men to realize and understand where they should rightly be. There is therefore a need to revisit the past, to recapture what was that true progress and development of the Yoruba society is only achievable when both genders have equal opportunities and privileges. The qualitative method of research was used for this study to examine the experiences, issues and challenges of Yoruba women in relation to gender disparity in southwest Nigeria in order to provide a thorough understanding of these problems. The researcher used the phenomenological research design in order to fully comprehend and describe the experiences of Yoruba women. The study revealed how these women have coped and are coping with these problems, efforts already in place addressing these issues in the Yoruba society, and what further recommendations and actions are needed for better impact. The information was gathered using an online survey comprised of open-ended and structured questions in which the respondents spoke about their experiences with patriarchy in Nigeria. The respondents consisted of 31 female participants of Yoruba heritage between the ages of 25 to 47 years residing in the United States and Nigeria. The researcher used the recounted experiences of the respondents to generate themes, which were subsequently examined by comparing the findings to literature. The researcher also contributed to the study from an emic perspective as a Yoruba woman who is part of the phenomenon she studied.
