Abstract
:
Using semi-structured interviews, this phenomenological study explored how a youth basketball program promotes peace amongst traditionally conflicting groups. Subjects included current and former Managing and Program Directors who have had direct contact with the youth participants in South Africa, Northern Ireland, the Middle East, and Cyprus. The findings strongly supported Ailport's contact theory as well as the themes of grassroots organizing and human growth and development. PeacePlayers International is contributing to the unification of conflicting groups by providing opportunities for people of traditionally conflicting groups to interact with one another around a shared interest. This is done based upon the local community's needs through the direct assistance of the local people themselves. Through this program the youth and young adults are gaining many skills including leadership, cooperation, and communication.
