Abstract : Refugees are individuals who flee their home countries in an effort to escape violence, war, or persecution. They often experience extensive trauma and may be forced to separate from loved ones. They encounter adversities migrating to a new region and challenges adjusting to a new living environment. Once relocated, refugees face additional stressors around acculturation, discrimination, and barriers to seeking services. The literature indicates that refugees are at increased risk of developing mental health disorders, but often do not seek services. This dissertation serves to disseminate greater awareness of the clinically relevant experiences of Syrian and Iraqi refugees who have relocated to the United States. To accomplish this goal, I further developed and expanded my knowledge of the cultures of Syrian and Iraqi individuals to better understand what services and interventions would be most appropriate. As a result of their cultural backgrounds and experiences of complex trauma, traditional westernized approaches may not be most beneficial. Instead, this dissertation aims to acknowledge the relevance of implementing non-threatening and culturally-sensitive interventions through a community-based approach. Clinical information for this dissertation was derived from a literature review focusing on empirical evidence. Additionally, interviews with field consultants were conducted to fill any gaps in the literature. The information derived from this dissertation was integrated into a PowerPoint presentation that was delivered to professionals at a community mental health center. A discussion of contributions and implications, strengths and limitations, along with recommendations for future research, are also presented to help those reading this dissertation increase their knowledge the unique experiences of Syrian and Iraqi refugees.
