Abstract : Nuclear reprocessing is a technique used to recover uranium and plutonium from used nuclear fuel for the purpose of manufacturing new fuel or atomic weapons and involves the production of radioactive wastes. Nuclear reprocessing overall can reduce the volume of radioactive waste compared to the disposal of entire used fuel elements and increases the amount of energy extracted from the fissile material. In this research, a radiological dose assessment was performed for a proposed nuclear reprocessing facility in Saudi Arabia. Specifically, this study investigated the possible radiological impacts of a nuclear reprocessing facility on the west coast of Saudi Arabia during both normal operations and a postulated accident scenario at two suggested sites. The radiological dose assessment was based on atmospheric releases and provided estimated doses to members of the public. The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) code was used in this study to evaluate the atmospheric dispersion of airborne emissions from the proposed facility. Radiation doses to members of the public were estimated based on the amount of radioactivity released to the environment, accounting for passage of the plume and subsequent environmental dispersion of radioactivity deposited on the ground. The results of this study indicate that the total effective dose for normal operations is far below the recommended or regulatory limit of radiation dose to members of the public at both suggested sites. The total effective dose for a postulated chemical explosion is expected to exceed the radiation dose limit for members of the public and have significant consequences to the environment. Overall the site near Duba City is recommended based on the results of this radiological dose assessment.
