Sports participation is of immense benefits to the soundness of an individual mental and social wellness, particularly for the university students. Thus, the study investigated the socio-psychological factors as determinants of sports participation among students of Kwara State University Malete, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The population of this study comprised all final year students 2019/2020 session from three faculties with the target population of 1,811. Multi-stage sampling techniques were used. Sample of 362 respondents was purposively selected from the three faculties (humanities, I.C.T and education); proportional sampling technique was used to select 20% of respondents from each of the three faculties, while stratified sampling technique was used to determine the number of male and female respondents. Research advisor was used to determine sample size for the study. Self structured questionnaire titled, “Socio-psychological Determinants of Sports’ Participation Questionnaire” (SPDSPQ) was used to collect relevant data for the study. The instrument was validated by three lecturers in the department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, Kwara State University, Malete. Test re-test method of reliability of the instrument was established, while Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to determine the reliability, coefficient and the reliability score of 0.087 was obtained. Mean and Standard Deviation was used to answer three research questions while the two null hypotheses formulated were tested using Multiple Regressions statistic at of 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that socio psychological factors positively contributed to sports participation. The findings of the study also indicated a positive influence between gender, culture, peer group, fear, attitude, belief and sports participation. Social factor (gender) significantly determines students’ sport participation in sports (B = 0.344; t(321) = 9.848, P = 0.000). Psychological factor (fear) significantly determines students’ sport participation (B = 0.466; t(321) = 16.984, P = 0.000). Based on these findings, the study concludes that gender, culture, peer group, fear, attitude and belief, all significantly determine sports participation among KWASU students. It is recommended that university management should employ competent and qualified coaches and trainers personnel who will plan, organise, schedule and execute purposeful sports programme for the students. Considering these, socio-psychological factors can motivate students to participate in sports programme and may be best done by qualified sports personnel and specialists.
