Abstract : Literature is a social phenomenon which plays a lot of roles in the development of the society. However, these roles are summed up under two divisions which are: Pleasure and Utility. This work has to do with the utility function and purposefulness of literature in impacting on the society. The functionality and purposefulness of literature come into limelight in various parts of the work under study. Thus, this work is aimed among other things at translating Toyin Abiodun’s “The Trials of Afonja’ into Arabic and studying the various functions of literature embedded in the play. The researcher identifies problem of study which include cultural and social gaps among nations resulting from limited work of drama translated into Arabic. Based on the above, the researcher adopts two popular methodologies among the Arab translation experts in translating the work. These approaches are Yuhana ibn Bitriq’s approach and Hunayn bn Ishaq’s methodology. The former gives consideration to meaning of words in a sentence independently and thus search for the words of same meaning in the target language while Hunayn’s approach gives consideration to the meaning of the complete sentence by getting it clearly understood in a complete sense, while the translator now expresses the meaning of the sentence as a whole in the target language. The two methods are adopted by this researcher because each has its own values and specific place of relevance. Meanwhile, the descriptive and historical methods are also employed, the former is to study the second aspect of the work which is the functional description of the play while the later is adopted to confirm the historical facts which the author subjected to imaginative thoughts. Chapter six is the concluding chapter that covers the summary of the research, result of findings some of which include the following: There are only few works of drama that are translated from other languages into Arabic and that the role of drama in the society is beyond pleasure. It also affirms that Yoruba nation had been a civilized nation who had an organized political structure before the coming of the Europeans. The researcher finally suggests among other things that efforts should be geared also towards the translation of works from Arabic to other languages to achieve the purpose of give and take. Arabic drama should also be put on films to make it available at homes and other places.
