Abstract : Considering the current administrations of both France and the United States is essential when discussing the impacts of weak Franco-American relations. The characteristics of the two administrations shape the relationship and can potentially be detrimental to current and future policy goals of both nations. Contrasting views and foreign policy goals enervate the continuation of a strong relationship as well as the efficacy and reliance on multilateral institutions such as NATO and multilateral deals such as the Paris Agreement and the JCPOA Iran deal to achieve common goals in the international system. This thesis will argue that maintaining strong Franco-American diplomatic relations are important for both France and the United States in order to maintain their leadership role in the world and to maintain legitimacy in the international system in order to promote their interests. The first chapter of this paper provides a discussion of realism and power as explained by John Mearsheimer and Joseph Nye followed by a description of Franco-American relations after the Cold War that incorporates the roles realism and power may have played in foreign policy decisions. The second chapter reviews the Trump-Macron relationship since 2017 by highlighting their personal and diplomatic relations, realist actions, and foreign policy decisions to underline the source of weakened bilateral relations. The last chapter of this thesis will include an evaluation of the current relationship and the future of Franco-American relations by professionals in the foreign affairs field. This research hopes to portray that negative impacts can occur if a relationship that is meant to remain stable is not. The paper will then conclude with what it could mean for the bilateral relationship if Trump were to win a second term as President as well as encourage future French and American administrations to seek beneficial relations with their strongest allies.
