Abstract : The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how petroleum industry technicians and technologists describe their experience with and the value they place on online education as professional development in Bonny Island, Southern Nigeria. The social cognitive career theory was used as the theoretical foundation for this study. The research questions for the study were: “How do petroleum industry technicians and technologists describe their experience with online education as professional development in Bonny Island, Southern Nigeria?” And “How do petroleum industry technicians and technologists describe the value they place on online education as professional development in Bonny Island, Southern Nigeria?” A mix of convenience and purposive sampling was used to select 11 participants from various oil and gas organizations in Bonny Island. Data collection was through semi-structured interviews with the participants and a focus group discussion. The Braun and Clarke thematic process with the aid of the MAXQDA application was used for the data coding and analysis. Fourteen themes emerged from this analysis where participants described their experience with online education as challenging, rigorous and life-transforming while they described the value they place on their online education as very high as they consider it as an avenue for quality education and an enabler for career advancement. The study conclusion highlighted the practical implications of online education as a vital tool for boosting employees’ professional development, enhancing self-efficacy at work and deriving value for personal career goals.
