Abstract : This case study explores and describes the perceptions of public-school teachers on government funding and academic outcomes in southeast Nigeria before and after the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War. The war, which was mostly political, affected other areas of life in Nigeria, especially in the southeastern region of Nigeria. The public education sector was one of the areas greatly affected. This study is limited to two public schools in southeast Nigeria, as a prototype of the other public schools in the region and because of time constraints inherent in a three-year fast-tracked doctoral program. The participants of this study were eight male teachers who taught before and after the civil war. Data were collected through in-depth unstructured interviews with the participants and was transcribed, analyzed and emergent themes were gathered. The research questions explore the contention that continual poverty and academic deficiencies could be perpetuated as a result of the Nigerian government’s compromise of academic rigor through failure to provide the enabling adequately funded environments for effective teaching and learning. Prior to the war, public education was effective because of the system of funding. Based on empirical literature reviewed, the breakdown on educational funding system has heightened the noticeable lack of interest in teaching and learning among teachers and students in the Nigeria educational system and has also been cited as one of the major causes of the Nigerian societal ills. Effective education has been compromised by lack of adequate funding and its resultant weakening of rigor in Nigeria’s educational process.
