Abstract : This study is among the first systematic investigations to examine the relationships between work-life balance, public service motivation and job satisfaction and the mediating role of public service motivation. This study approached the work-life balance concept from work-life enhancement, conflict, role quality and work-life typology. The purpose of this study is twofold. It first seeks to investigate the relationships between work-life balance, public service motivation and job satisfaction in the context of the public sector in Indonesia. The second purpose seeks to examine the mediating effect of public service motivation on the relationship between work-life balance and job satisfaction. This study comprised a survey of employees working in the Fire and Rescue Department of Jakarta province. A total of 421 questionnaires were tested for further statistical data analysis. The study employed Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) to test the hypothesis and interpret the data. The mediating effect was determined using Preacher and Hayes’ (2008) PROCESS macro for SPSS (Hayes, 2012). In the context of the Fire and Rescue Department of Jakarta, work-life balance was found to have positive and strong relationships with public service motivation and job satisfaction. However, interestingly, work-life conflict was not found to have a negative association with job satisfaction as suggested by previous studies. Several possible explanations are discussed. In this study, public service motivation was found to corroborate the earlier findings. The results suggest that public service motivation is correlated stronger with intrinsic job satisfaction than extrinsic job satisfaction. The findings of this study also reveal that people who experience more work-life balance are most likely to have higher levels of public service motivation and job satisfaction. The results of this study also indicate a mediating effect of public service motivation on the relationship between work-life balance and job satisfaction. This thesis contributes to the body of knowledge by exploring the relationships between work-life balance, public sector motivation and job satisfaction in the context of the public sector in Indonesia. This thesis also contributes to the body of knowledge on how to evaluate work-life balance by exploring the dimensions of work-life balance and their relationships with public service motivation and job satisfaction. This thesis adds insight into the relationship between work-life balance and job satisfaction through public service motivation among employees working in the Fire and Rescue Department of Jakarta, Indonesia. The contributions of this study are discussed in more detail in chapter five and six.
