Abstract : Abdullah b. Abdul Kadir Munsyi (1797–1854), considered the first modern Malay author, wrote on contemporary topics for the print medium. Born in Melaka of mixed Arab-Tamil and Malay ancestry, he died on pilgrimage, shortly after setting foot in Mecca. His native languages were Tamil and Malay, and he learnt Arabic, Hindi, and later English. Trained as a notary, he worked briefly as a clerk for Thomas S.
