Abstract	:	Abdullah Cevdet (ʿAbdullāh Cevdet, 9 September 1869–29 November 1932) was born in the town of Arapgir (ʿArapgīr), in the Ottoman province of Mamuretülaziz (Maʾmūretü l-ʿAzīz, in eastern Turkey), to a lower-middle-class Muslim family. He grew up in a pious household and received a religious education from family members. When he was very young, his face was scarred with pockmarks because his father refused to let him have a vaccination for smallpox on religious grounds, which played an important role in his later acceptance of scientism and
