Abstract : Abū l-Ghayth b. Jamīl (556–651/1160–1253), a major figure in Yemeni Ṣūfism and founder of the al-Ghaythiyya order, was known as “The Greatest Sun” (Shams al-Shumūs). He was born into the tribe of Ḥajūr, in the village of Mawāl, along the coastal area of Tihāma. Mediaeval sources portray his early life as violent and depraved, as he earned his livelihood as a highway robber. According to this legendary account, he was once lying in wait to rob passers-by when he heard a voice (hātif)
