Abstract	:	Abū l-Hudā al-Ṣayyādī (1850–1909), the eponym by which Muḥammad b. Ḥasan Wādī al-Ṣayyādī is more commonly known, was born in Khān Shaykhūn, a small village in northern Syria. Although he came from a poor family, he managed to establish contacts in influential scholarly and political circles in Damascus, Aleppo, and Istanbul during his adolescence. With the support of these people he was made naqīb al-ashrāf of Aleppo at the strikingly young age of twenty-four. In 1879 he became religious adviser to the young Sulṭān
