Abstract	:	Abū l-Ṭamaḥān al-Qaynī (d. c. 11/632 or 30/650–1) was a mukhaḍram poet—one whose life bridged the period from the Jāhiliyya into the early years of Islam—of al-Qayn b. Jasr of the Quḍāʿa tribe, whose name was Ḥanẓala b. al-Sharqī (or Sharqī), or, according to other sources, Rabīʿa b. ʿAwf. His tribe lived in several places, including the outlying areas of al-Shām; al-Marāʿī, southeast of al-Shām; and Thajr, which is between Wādī l-Qurā and Taymāʾ, in northwestern Arabia.
