Abstract : Abū Saʿd al-Makhzūmī , ʿĪsā b. Khālid b. al-Walīd (d. c. 230/845), was a minor poet from Baghdad. He composed panegyrics on the caliph al-Maʾmūn (r. 198–218/813–33), but in the sources his career and poetry are usually linked with his rival Diʿbil (d. 246/860). While Diʿbil championed the cause of the South Arabs, Abū Saʿd supported the North Arabs, and in particular the Banū Makhzūm, to whom he claimed affiliation. However, his descent from this group was disputed by its members, who publicly
