Abstract : Naṣr Ḥāmid Abū Zayd (1943–2010) was an Egyptian specialist in Qurʾānic hermeneutics who was accused of apostasy, fled Egypt, and spent the rest of career in Europe. He was born of humble origins in Quḥāfa, a village in the delta, and was at first trained in the radio department of the Egyptian ministry of transport. In 1981, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from Cairo University. After teaching Arabic at Osaka University, in Japan (1985–9), he returned to Egypt and was named associate professor in
