Abstract : The Adrar (“mountain,” in the Berber languages), in the north of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania , is a terrain of high relief, with cuestas overhanging sandhills (Warān, Maqtayr) and stony plains (Amsaga). It is a desert region with an extensive river system that permits the development of Saharan floodplain (grāyr) , including date palm plantations. The massif is often called the Adrar Tamar, the Date Adrar, to distinguish it from other Adrar in the Sahara. Cave paintings and rock engravings show evidence of ancient habitation of the country, and oral traditions
