Yusuf Akçura (Akçuraoğlu, 1292–3/1876–1935), a Tatar intellectual, historian, and politician, was born in Simbirsk (today’s Ulyanovsk, on the Volga River, in western Russia) to Süleymanoğlu Hasan Efendi and Bibi Kamer (Fahri) Banu. He was related on both sides to rich and influential merchant families of Kazan that had long served in the local administration and as ulema ( ʿulamāʾ , Muslim religious scholars). After his father’s death, he moved to the Ottoman Empire and settled in Istanbul (1300–1/1883). During his teen years he travelled frequently
