Abstract
:
Malik Vicdani Aksel (1319/1901–87), a Turkish painter and professor of art, was born in Katerini, close to Thessaloniki, in present-day Greece. His father, Mehmed Şevket Bey, who served as an Ottoman customs officer and a treasury official in various cities of Rumelia, including Skopje, Thessaloniki, and Serres, was interested in painting, music, and the art of calligraphy. Mehmed Bey’s tubes of paint were apparently the favourite toys of the young Malik, who watched in awe and provided assistance when his father worked on his oil paintings.
