Abstract : Badīʿ al-Zamān Abū l-Qāsim Hibatallāh b. al-Ḥusayn al-Badīʿ al-Asṭurlābī (d. 534/1139–40) was an illustrious Arab scholar, physician, philosopher, astronomer, and poet, who distinguished himself in the design and construction of astronomical instruments, including astrolabes, whence the nisba portion of his name. The date of his birth is unknown. In 510/1116–7 he was in Isfahan in close contact with the Christian physician Ibn al-Tilmīdh (d. 560/1165). Later he lived in Baghdad, where the exercise of his art—presumably, the construction
