Abstract	:	Āqā Muḥammad ʿAlī al-Bihbahānī (1144–1216/1731–1801) was the most famous son of Muḥammad Bāqir al-Bihbahānī (d. 1205/1791) and like his father was an ardent defender of the Uṣūlī school of Shīʿī jurisprudence. He was born in Karbalāʾ and, like his father, vaunted his claimed descent from the great Ṣafavid jurist Muḥammad Bāqir al-Majlisī (d. 1110/1699). He spent his early life in Bihbahān in southwestern Iran (where Muḥammad Bāqir al-Bihbahānī had relocated) before returning to Karbalāʾ with his father to study for two
