Hishām b. ʿAmr al-Fuwaṭī (d. before 230/845) (Van Ess, TG , 4:2–3; Van Ess, EIr , 10:119–20) was an early Muʿtazilī theologian from Basra. He travelled widely on Muʿtazilī missions, visited Baghdad, and made a strong impression on the caliph al-Maʾmūn (r. 198–218/814–33) (al-Jishumī, vol. 1, fol. 58b). Al-Fuwaṭī was influenced by the anthropology of Muʿammar b. ʿAbbād (d. 215/830), who was known for his pioneering incorporation of the doctrine of “natures” (ṭabāʾiʿ) into Muʿtazilī theology.
