Abū Jaʿfar Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. al-Sayyid al-Ghāfiqī (d. ca. 560/1165), a botanist and pharmacologist of Muslim Spain, was considered by Max Meyerhof to be the greatest pharmocognocist of the Islamic tradition (Mayerhof and Sobhy, 33). His Kitāb fī l-adwiya al-mufrada (“Book of simple drugs”), a huge compilation of botanical and pharmacognostic information, is part of a long and distinguished scholarly tradition.
