Abstract : The al-Jisr family , who trace their genealogy to the prophet Muḥammad, has been one of the most prominent religious and political dynasties of modern-day Lebanon since the mid-eighteenth century. Their importance arises from their active participation in the religious, political, and educational life of Tripoli (Ṭarābulus al-Shām) during Ottoman times. The family descended from the Āl al-Māʾī of Damietta (Egypt) and settled in Greater Syria around 1170/1757. Their social and political influence was grounded first and foremost in Ṣūfī leadership and was consolidated through
