Abstract : Al-Murābiṭūn , named for the mediaeval Almoravid Muslim empire in northwestern Africa, was a jihadist organisation that broke away temporarily from al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). Between 2013 and 2015, al-Murābiṭūn and its constituent elements perpetrated some of the most significant terrorist attacks in the history of northwestern Africa, including the mass hostage-taking at In Aménas, Algeria in January 2013, the raids on a uranium mine and a military base in northern Niger in May 2013, and two attacks in Mali’s capital, Bamako, in 2015,
