Sultan Alauddin Tumenanga ri Gaukanna (d. 1639), ruler of the kingdom of Gowa in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, became the first in his kingdom to adopt Islam, in 1605, and he helped spread the religion throughout eastern Indonesia. First known as I Manga’rangi Daeng Manrabbia, he became ruler of the kingdom of Gowa at the age of seven, in place of his dethroned elder brother.
