Abstract	:	The history of modern Algerian literature is framed by a lengthy national struggle for freedom, epitomised by the war of independence in the middle of the twentieth century (1954–62) and a civil war in the last decade of the same century. The struggle to rid the country of French colonial rule was the force that unified the various ethnic groups, who succeeded in achieving Algeria’s independence. However, the elimination of the common enemy exposed existing internal divisions and gradually led to a confrontation of ethnic and ideological forces
