Abstract : Almaẓ (d. 1291/1875 or 1308/1891) was Egypt’s most famous female vocalist of the mid-nineteenth century, whose legendary name is commonly linked to the singer and composer ʿAbduh al-Ḥāmūlī (1260–1318/1845–1901), whom she eventually married (Aḥmad Amīn, Qāmus al-ʿādāt wa-l-taqālīd wa-l-taʿābīr al-miṣriyya , Cairo 1953, 283–4). Historical information about her career and repertoire is scarce and often contradictory. Some sources state that she was an Alexandrian by birth, the daughter of a Levantine jeweller, and others assert that
