Abstract : Almería (Madīnat al-Mariyya, from marāʾa , “watchtower”) was an important city of al-Andalus situated on the southeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The city arose out of a port, al-Bayyāna (Span., Pechina), established during the mid-third/ninth century. Although there exist some archaeological remains from previous times, such as a recently found wall that dates possibly from the late Roman period, very little is known about the transition of this settlement to the one found in the Middle Ages. In 244–5/858–9 a watchtower ( marāʾa )
