Abstract : Amghar (pl. imgharen) is a Berber term used historically to designate a lay tribal chief (as opposed to a hereditary saint, agurram , pl. igurramen), to whom power was delegated by the tribal assembly (jamāʿa) for a given period, often a year. The word derives from the Berber root mghr , meaning “great,” with respect to height, age, or social position. From time to time the equilibrium of this system of an annually elected amghar was disrupted by a powerful chief who was able to abrogate the will of the assembly and
