Abstract

Samet Ağaoğlu (b. 1909 in Baku, Azerbaijan—d. 6 August 1982 in Istanbul) was a Turkish writer, historian, and politician. His father Ahmet Agayev Bey, later Ağaoğlu (d. 1939), was a well-educated Azerbaijani journalist and politician who, after the Young Turk revolution in 1908, emigrated with his family from Baku to Istanbul. Here, he soon became an important figure in the intellectual scene of Istanbul based around the Türk ocağı (“Turkish hearth”) club, which advocated the unity of all Turkish people at that time of burgeoning Turkish nationalism.
